Professor Tai Leung CHONG, Executive Director, IGEF, CUHK

Abstract:

China has been the world’s engine of growth for the past two decades. It is now the second largest economy in the world and one of the U.S.’s biggest trading partners. Session 2

Professor Chen LI, Assistant Professor, Centre for China Studies, CUHK

Abstract:

This talk provides a brief review of China’s transition from a traditional central planning economy to a modern socialist market system. Using a historical and comparative approach based on simple tools of demand and supply analysis, this talk will explain the logic of China’s traditional central planning system and the dynamics of China’s gradualist market-oriented reforms. It will also discuss the current phase of China’s economic development and the challenges that China faces in changing its growth model.

Session 3

Speaker:

Professor Huanhuan ZHANG, Assistant Professor, IGEF, CUHK

Abstract:

The global financial crisis (GFC) has brought to the fore the limits of the Chinese export-led growth strategy and the need for China to rebalance its international business approaches. This lecture outlines what may be the new chapter of Chinese outward-mercantilism, which aims at securing a higher rate of returns on its net foreign asset position, as well as leveraging its success in manufacturing exports, natural resource imports and RMB internationalization.
